European Commission Will Examine Safety of Mochovce NPP Project

The European Commission (EC) is expected to present its statement concerning safety of the completion works of the third and fourth units of the Nuclear Power Plant in Mochovce (EMO) in a few months. The European Commissioner for Energy Andris Piebalgs stated at a press conference at the European Nuclear Energy Forum (ENEF) in Bratislava on Monday that the EC is currently evaluating the EMO completion works. “However, eventually the construction will be approved by the Slovak Nuclear Supervision Office,” added Mr. Piebalgs. According to him, the EC will only issue a statement determining whether the completion is safe or not.

Enel Slovak Unit Closes Biggest-Ever Slovak Corp Finance Deal

PRAGUE - (Dow Jones)- Slovakia's leading electricity company Slovenske Elektrarne, 66%-owned by Italy's Enel SPA, said on its Web site Tuesday it closed a EUR 800 million financing deal with a consortium of banks, the largest corporate financing deal in Slovakia to date.

Slovenske Elektrarne concluded a revolving credit line for seven years to finance its investments, which will reach 110 billion koruna ($4.65 billion) by 2013, the company said.

Slovakia aims to hold new N-plant tender in 2009

BRATISLAVA, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Slovakia will probably launch a tender to build a new 1,200 megawatt nuclear plant in 2009 and has been approached by more than six potential investors, Economy Minister Lubomir Jahnatek said on Wednesday.
The country, which needs to meet rising demand for power in the fast growing economy and replace decommissioned stations, plans to build the plant consisting of two units at the existing Jaslovske Bohunice nuclear site by 2025, he said.

THE STATE ironed out the final wrinkles plaguing the sale of Slovak power utility Slovenské elektrárne to Italian buyer Enel in what is the country's last big privatization deal in the energy sector.
Slovakia might soon see its nuclear power plant in Mochovce completed, along with the construction of its first wind power plant if power producer Enel makes good on its investment plan promises.

A plan to upgrade two nuclear reactors in Solvakia may force Western governments to stop dithering over nuclear safety in Eastern Europe.

Ever since the reactor at Chernobyl exploded in 1986 spewing radioactivity over more than 20 countries, Europeans have lived in fear of another large-scale nuclear disaster. That fear grew when the Iron Curtain fell, revealing the full extent of the problems with nuclear plants in the former Eastern bloc. It also fuelled a fierce debate: should Soviet-designed reactors be shut down or could they be made 'safe'?
