Tunisia and France sign accords on civilian nuclear cooperation, immigration

France and Tunisia signed accords on nuclear cooperation and immigration on Monday, the first day of French President Nicolas Sarkozy's state visit to the North African nation.

The accords were the first in a spate of deals — including a Tunisian airline's possible purchase of more than a dozen Airbus aircraft — aimed at strengthening economic and political ties between France and its former protectorate.

Russia and Egypt sign nuclear energy pact

NOVO-OGARYOVO: Russia and Egypt signed an agreement on Tuesday paving the way for Russian firms to bid for lucrative contracts to build nuclear power plants in Egypt.

The nuclear energy deal was signed after Russian President Vladimir Putin and Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak met near the Russian capital for talks, which also covered Moscow’s plan to host a Middle East peace conference.

Egypt Seeks International Bids for Atomic Plants, Al-Ahram Says

Feb. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Egypt will invite international bids next week for the design and supervision of nuclear power plants, Al-Ahram reported, citing Electricity and Energy Minister Hassan Younes.

The winner will advise on design and safety procedures, the state-run newspaper said, citing Younes.

Gadaffi’s visit to France sparks protests

Muammer Gadaffi, the Libyan leader, on Monday began a five-day visit to Paris to buy arms, nuclear power and civil airliners, triggering a storm of criticism from campaigners and an outburst from a government minister who said France should not accept his “kiss of death”.

Colonel Gadaffi was last night expected to sign a clutch of contracts valued at about €10bn ($14.7bn, £7bn) with French companies at the Elysée palace following talks with Nicolas Sarkozy. The Libyan leader is looking to buy 26 Airbus aircraft, a nuclear power station, French Rafale fighters and missiles, spare parts for his fleet of Mirage fighters and military helicopters.

France and Algeria Sign Nuclear Deal

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) -- France and Algeria agreed to cooperate on civilian nuclear technologies Tuesday, while French oil and gas giant Total SA signed a deal to build a petrochemical complex in the North African country.

The announcements came during French President Nicolas Sarkozy's three-day visit to Algeria, his first full state visit to the ex-French colony since his May election.

PARIS: Six months into his term, President Nicolas Sarkozy is aggressively pursuing a new policy to give Muslim countries access to nuclear power - and win lucrative contracts for France's energy champions in the process.

After signing a memorandum of understanding with Libya in the summer, Sarkozy struck a preliminary cooperation accord with Morocco last month. Diplomats say he is planning to discuss nuclear power during trips to Algeria in December and Saudi Arabia in January.

Russia to supply 7 kg of nuclear fuel for Ukraine test reactor

MOSCOW, November 1 (RIA Novosti) - Russian state-run nuclear fuel producer TVEL will supply 7 kilograms of low enriched uranium to a research reactor in Ukraine in 2008, the company announced on Thursday.

The nuclear fuel will be delivered under a Russian-U.S. program, Reduced Enrichment for Research and Test Reactors (RERTR), aimed at developing technical methods to convert reactors from the use of highly-enriched uranium (HEU), which can be used in atom bombs, to low enriched uranium (LEU).
