NRC to accept comments on importing Italian waste

Next week, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission will formally begin inviting the public and affected government agencies to weigh in on EnergySolutions' application to accept low-level radioactive waste from Italy.

But the agency is already welcoming public comments, said Brooke Smith, a member of the NRC team reviewing the import license.

On 17 December the first transport to France of irradiated fuel still present in Italy was completed. The first two special containers, with 34 of the 1243 fuel rods that will be reprocessed at La Hague, left the shut down Caorso nuclear power plant.

Italy begins shipments of uranium to France: report

ROME, Dec 16 2007 A first shipment of uranium bars left a disused nuclear plant in northern Italy on Sunday bound for France, where they will be reprocessed in Le Hague, Normandy, the ANSA news agency reported.

The 34 uranium bars -- the first 7.5 tonnes of 235 tonnes of waste to be sent to France for disposal -- were first loaded in two casks onto a truck under heavy guard, then placed on a special train for the journey across the Alps.

Company's plans to bring in Italian nuclear waste to US raises fears

CHARLESTON, South Carolina: Environmentalists and some federal lawmakers voiced concerns over the planned shipment to the United States of radioactive nuclear waste from Italy, questioning the volume of waste being brought in and whether it exceeds federal safety standards.

EnergySolutions wants to ship about 200,000 cubic feet (5,664 cubic meters) of the radioactive waste into the United States, process it in Tennessee before burying it at a site in Clive, Utah, where the company is based.

Albania in nuclear export scheme

It is one of the poorest countries in Europe, which still endures acute electricity shortages and almost daily blackouts, even in the capital.

Still, Albania is undaunted. In a proposal that has alarmed neighbouring Greece but elicited interest from Italy, the country is proposing to host nuclear plants that would supply electricity across the Adriatic by way of an underwater cable.

European anti-nuclear ministers want alternatives to nuclear power

Vienna - High-ranking European government officials, representing anti-nuclear states Austria, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Italy, Luxembourg, and Latvia, called Monday for alternatives to a renaissance of nuclear energy.

The group met in Vienna on Sunday and Monday to forge a joint declaration against nuclear energy. At a press conference, the participating politicians called for more investment into energy efficiency measures and renewable energies.

Italy 'to export nuclear waste to UK'

Italy is hoping to export 99% of its nuclear waste to the UK after public demonstrations made it impossible to find a suitable site on Italian soil.

The Italian government has 235 tonnes of spent fuel from the country's long decommissioned reactors in deteriorating stores.
