Survey: 69 pct of individuals do not want a nuclear power plant in Estonia

TALLINN, March 26 (LETA) – According to a poll carried out by Sustainable Estonia Institute, 69 per cent of Estonian residents do not want a nuclear power plant built in Estonia, writes ETV24.

44 per cent of respondents also did not support building a nuclear power plant in the countries in the vicinity of Estonia. Only 16 per cent agreed with building a nuclear power plant in Estonia and 44 per cent supported building one in the neighbouring countries.

72 per cent of those who opposed building a nuclear power plant in Estonia explained their opposition with the disastrous consequences of accidents, 45 per cent were also concerned about the environmental risks involved in storing waste.

59 per cent of those who supported nuclear power plants in Estonia justified their position with the fact that the pollution from production of energy would decrease and the state of the environment in North-East Estonia would improve. 55 per cent noted the large demand for electricity, 40 per cent also stated that decreased dependence of Russia would also be important.
