The Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund (KIDSF), administered by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), will grant 39 mln euro ($53.1 mln) to Bulgaria for the construction of a thermal power plant on the site of the Kozloduy nuclear plant, Dnevnik daily reported on July 8, 2007.
The new power station will supply heating to the nuclear plant and to the town of Kozloduy, on the Danube.
Bulgaria will also get 125.8 mln euro ($171.4 mln) in support of various nuclear and non-nuclear sector projects.
The donors have agreed to allocate 11.84 mln euro ($16.13 mln) for processing and conditioning of solid radioactive waste. In addition, Bulgaria will get 20 mln euro ($27.2 mln) for the decommissioning of units 1 and 2 of Kozloduy N-plant, which the country had to close ahead of its EU entry in January 2007.
Bulgaria signed an agreement with KIDSF in 2001 over the closure of the two reactors of Kozloduy N-plant. So far, KIDSF has donated about 200 mln euro (272.5 mln) under projects in the nuclear sector. The biggest project, funded by KIDSF, is the construction of a new dry storage facility for spent nuclear fuel.
