Europeans’ reservations about nuclear energy on the decline: survey

(BRUSSELS) - Reservations about the use of nuclear energy are on the decline in Europe, although there is still no majority in favour, according to an EU survey published on Thursday.

Some 44 percent of Europeans are either “totally in favour” or “fairly in favour” of nuclear energy, according to the survey, carried out in February and March. (more…)

Finnish poll suggests opposition to sixth nuclear reactor

Helsinki - A majority of Finnish voters oppose the construction of a sixth nuclear reactor, according to a survey published Thursday. Finland currently operates four nuclear reactors and construction of a fifth
reactor is underway at Olkiluoto, south-western Finland, where two reactors are operating.

The survey suggested 53 per cent opposed building a sixth reactor while 34 per cent had no objections to additional reactors. (more…)

Lower confidence in Swedish nuclear power industry, survey says

Stockholm - Confidence in the Swedish nuclear power industry has dropped to its lowest level in 20 years in the wake of a reactor shutdown in 2006, a report said Wednesday. The autumn 2007 survey by Gothenburg University researchers suggested 39 per cent had “very great or rather great” confidence in information about energy and nuclear power issues issued by the nuclear power industry, down 10 percentage points on 2006. EU favours renewable energy for the future

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU citizens largely favour renewable energies while only 20 percent are for nuclear energy, according to a new European Commission survey.

The Eurobarometer study - published on Monday (8 January) just two days ahead of the publication of the commission’s major EU energy plan - shows that 80 percent of EU citizens back solar energy while 71 percent are in favour of wind energy. (more…)
