Information on earthquake which occurred in Eastern Canada. |
An earthquake occurred in parts of Southern Ontario and Eastern Québec on the afternoon of June 23, 2010. The earthquake was rated at 5.0 on the Richter Scale and was felt at the Darlington, Pickering and Gentilly-2 nuclear power plants, as well as at the Chalk River Laboratories.
All licensees have confirmed that their operations have not been affected by the earthquake. There is no indication nor anticipation of any impact for the stations. As per procedures, licensees are completing a thorough review of station systems to confirm.

Small traces of explosives found in a security checkpoint near a NPP |
Wednesday morning 21 May one subcontractor of Oskarshamn Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) was stopped at a security checkpoint. The security staff of the NPP found traces of an explosive substance on a plastic bag carried by a person. This was verified through extra controls with the used control equipment. The police was informed and took the person into custody on suspicion for planning sabotage. Later during the day another person was suspected to be involved with the person carrying the plastic bag that had traces of explosive substances and was also taken into custody.

Manual Shutdown at Embalse N.P.P |
On December 15th 2006, Embalse N.P.P went to "safe shutdown condition" following the corresponding procedures. It has done to repair a Primary Heat Transport System Main Pump seal (3312-P4).Embalse startup today at 7:30 AM

Chemical Explosion at fuel fabrication facility |
On Sunday, the 17.11.2002 early morning around 0415 hrs, there was a blast in the thermo syphon evaporator unit of Natural Uranium Oxide Fuel Plant (NUOFP) at Nuclear Fuel Complex Hyderabad, which concentrates Uranyl Nitrate Solution. This unit is under use since the inception of NUOFP (more than 4 years). About 100 litres of solution containing 100 gm per litre of Uranium spilled in the floor of the Plant. The spilled solution has been later cleaned and floor has been de-contaminated. There was no injury to the plant personnel.

Fire at Dukovany NPP |
On 6/10/2000 at 7:07 the automatic electronic fire detectors EPS in central fire control room of Dukovany NPP announced the electric cable local fire in cable channel V216/1. This cable channel is outside of the building in front of the central pumping station of circulation cooling water of Dukovany NPP. Fire brigade arrived to the place signaling fire immediately after occurrence of the signal and fire was extinguished at 7:10. The fire was caused by short circuit in coupling of 6 kV cable BQDV no. 2 of reactor 4 unit, which is presently in refuelling period and scheduled maintenance.

Tornado sighting within protected area |
On 29 September 1999, a tornado was sighted within the plant protected area. The unit was in cold shutdown for a refueling outage, with the reactor head installed. Shutdown cooling remained in operation throughout the event. The licensee declared an ALERT emergency classification as a result of the tornado. The plant experienced some minor damage to non-safety equipment, but no safety systems were affected and off-site electrical power remained available.

Discovery of suspicious item in plant |
On 5 March 1999, a security officer discovered a suspicious object within the plant protected area. The licensee treated the object as if it was a bomb, and declared an ALERT emergency classification. An explosive ordinance disposal unit responded to the plant, and determined that the object was not a bomb.
Justification: This event is rated as out of scale in accordance with Part I-1.3 of the INES Users Manual, as it did not involve any possible radiological hazard and did not affect the safety layers.

Odor of combustible gas in turbine building |
On 17 April 1998, workers in the main turbine condenser bay detected a strong odor, described as that of propane or acetylene. Personnel were evacuated from the area, and the building ventilation system was used to purge the odor from the building. An ALERT Emergency Classification was declared as a precautionary measure as the licensee worked to identify and isolate the source of the odor. The source of the odor was later discovered to be an industrial lubricant from a gearbox being used in the main turbine condenser bay.

Small fire in the research reactor LR-O building in Rez |
The research reactor LR-O in Rez was in shutdown because of a central heating reconstruction. On May 20, 1997 at 9.00 a.m. a small fire occurred in the reactor building. Isolations of pipes and cables burned in the central heat exchanger room, which is situated out of the radiological controlled area. The fire was caused by external workers and extinguished very quickly. No injuries occurred, no influence on nuclear safety was assessed. The event is reported because of a possible public interest.

Rupture of a freon storage tank |
A tank used to store freon mixed with oil during chiller maintenance ruptured along a seam causing some damage to Chiller Building siding and loss of freon and oil. The tank was located outside the chiller Building in the open air at approx. 34 deg. C with direct sunlight exposure.
