Loss of a type "A" package during a road shipment between France and Italy

A radioactive material package was sent on 30 November 2001 by CIS BIO International (Saclay, France) to Schering PSA (Tronzano Vercellese, Italy) and carried by road by Rinaldo Rinaldi SRL (Rome, Italy). On 4 December 2001, the consignee has declared that he had not received the package. this package contains a Technetium generator, device used in nuclear medicine. Package characteristics are the following:
Content: Molybdenium-99/Technetium-99 source; Activity: 141 GBq the day of shipping; Type "A"; Transport Index: 3.2; Category: III-yellow; Weight: 17 kg; The package consists in a 28 litres metallic bucket loaded with the device blocked with polystyrene.
Searches carried out by CIS Bio International, Schering and Rinaldi have not given any results up to now. This package was part of 177 packages, with or without radioactive material, all addressed to Schering and shipped in a unique lorry from Rinaldi. transportation was achieved without transhipment.
Due to the loss of a radioactive source, the ASN has rated this event at level 1 on the INES scale.
