Damage of a type "A" package during transhipment at Roissy airport (France) between Poland and Ukraine

A radioactive material package has been damaged during handling in Roissy Charles De Gaulle airport on April 9th, 2002. The package has fallen from 1,5 meters high. The drop caused the opening of the cardboard box and one of the metal cans inside, without releasing the radioactive content. The handling was taking place in the bonded warehouse of AIR FRANCE and was subcontracted by SODEXI. This package was sent by POLATOM, Otwock-Swierk , from Warsaw, Poland, to UGPP IZOTOP, Kiev, Ukraine. Package characteristics are the following:
Content: Iodine 131 liquid
Activity: 16 GBq (including 6 GBq for the opened can)
Type: "A"
Transport index: 1,1
Category: III-yellow
Firemen from the airport have neutralised the area. Radiological controls did not show any contamination on workers or surfaces.
