ERF description: A type B (U) Package was used to transport a cobalt 60 source from a hospital in Leeds to Windscale. Routine monitoring on receipt revealed a higher background reading than expected. The cause of the elevated reading was traced to the package containing the cobalt 60 source, which was found to have a dose rate under the package of 3.5 Gy h-1 (Gamma) in a collimated beam. Doses recorded by staff undertaking the source transfer appear to be typical of those recorded previously for the type of work performed.
