On January 27, 1994 unit 2 was in normal operation mode. At 2:31 the operator shut down the reactor by pushing the emergency knob because of the failure of the reactor control rod system. The failure was reasoned by a mechanical malfunction of one of the controls on the reactor control board. The opertor followed the regular prescribed procedures. The reactor shutdown was normal. The regular reactor protection system, automatics, safety systems acted within the design limits. Neither on-site nor off-site radiation impact occurred. The event was rated provisionally as INES level 0.
