Ukraine, Russia sign deal to build two nuclear power reactors

Ukraine and Russia signed Wednesday an agreement on cooperation in construction of two nuclear power reactors at Ukraine’s Khmelnytskiy Nuclear Power Plant, the government reported.

The agreement was signed in Kiev by Yuriy Boyko, the Ukrainian energy and fuel minister, and Sergei Kiriyenko, the general director of Rosatom, the Russian state nuclear power corporation. The value of the agreement was not disclosed. Ukraine had been seeking to attract investments worth about $3.83 billion that would be enough to build the two reactors at Khmelnytskiy NPP by the end of 2016. (more…)

Russia’s Atomstroiexport to build Khmelnytsky reactors three and four

KIEV, Oct. 7 – The general contractor to build reactors three and four at the Khmelnytsky nuclear power plant will be Russia’s ZAO Atomstroiexport, a source in the Fuel and Energy Ministry told Interfax-Ukraine.

“The interagency tender commission on the selection of the type of generating units for reactors three and four at the Khmelnytsky NPP has finished its work. After studying proposals from Atomstroiexport, South Koera’s ÊÅÐÑÎ and U.S. company Westinghouse, the commission said that the Russian project was the best,” the source said.

Reactor at West Ukrainian Nuclear Plant Reconnected to Grid

Kiev, 26 September: Power generating unit No 2 at the Khmelnytskyy nuclear power plant was reconnected to the power grid at 2051 local time [1751 gmt] on 25 September after emergency repairs, the plant’s press service told UNIAN.

Priorities for Ukraine’s nuclear industry

PRIORITIES FOR UKRAINE’S NUCLEAR INDUSTRY were the focus of a June 12 strategy meeting led by Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. According to a statement released by Ukraine’s nuclear operator, Energoatom, Tymoshenko said that immediate priorities include the construction of two new units at the Khmelnitsky nuclear power station and life extension for Rovno-1 and -2 and South Ukraine-1, which are now scheduled to end production between 2011 and 2013. She also identified the treatment of spent fuel and the development of a complete fuel cycle capability as priorities. (more…)

Ukrainian Nuclear Reactor Shut Down Over Malfunction

Kiev, 25 July: The third unit of the Rivne nuclear power plant was automatically disconnected from the Ukrainian power network and shut down on Thursday [24 July], the Emergency Situations Ministry said.

The ministry explained the shutdown with the insufficient level of water in the steam generator’s cooler. The radiation is normal, the ministry said. (more…)
