WARSAW - Poland hopes to reduce its heavy reliance on coal, which produces harmful greenhouse gases, by building a few nuclear power plants by 2030, Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Waldemar Pawlak said on Thursday.
Pawlak’s ministry is currently working on a new energy strategy designed to meet the Polish economy’s booming demand for electricity and to modernize its communist-era power plants. (more…)
Russia intends to build 26 major nuclear power reactors over twelve years to come, chief of the state-run corporation Rosatom, Sergei Kiriyenko, said. Kiriyenko was speaking at the 52nd general conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on 29th september.
“The pace of commissioning new nuclear power reactors is pegged to our current plans, but it can be adjusted in terms of scale and deadlines,” he said.”Construction work is underway at five sites (Leningrad, Novovoronezh, Kalinin, Rostov and Beloyarsk NPPs),” he said, adding that design and exploration work was in progress on another 14 reactor projects. Russia’s nuclear energy monopoly Rosatom has agreed on construction of a new power plant in Russia’s European exclave of Kaliningrad, the company said.
Rosatom chief Sergei Kiriyenko inked the deal Wednesday, Aug. 27, for the construction of the plant about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from the capital of the Baltic Sea exclave between Poland and Lithuania. (more…)
VILNIUS - An announcement by Moscow that it intended to build two nuclear reactors in the Kaliningrad region triggered dismay and alarm in neighboring Lithuania, which is struggling to get plans for its own atomic power plant off the ground.
Sergey Kiriyenko, head of the Rosatom nuclear energy agency, announced on April 16 that Russia would build two reactors with a combined 2,300 megawatts output in the region of Kaliningrad. He signed a framework agreement together with Kaliningrad Governor Georgy Boos. (more…)
