RWE interested in Dutch nuclear newbuild if new govt revokes ban

German utility RWE has indicated its interest in building a nuclear power plant in the Netherlands should a new government revoke the ban on such projects, RWE CEO Juergen Grossmann said at the company’s annual earnings press conference Thursday in Essen.

“We are interested and we are competent,” Grossmann said, when asked about the issue by a Dutch journalist. (more…)

RWE will fight for Dutch nuclear stake

LONDON (Reuters) – German RWE, Europe’s fifth-largest utility, will fight to take over Essent’s stake in the Netherland’s only nuclear power plant, disputing a claim by peer Delta that it should sell it on.

RWE does not have to comply with a demand by Dutch state-owned utility Delta to sell on the 50 percent stake of the Borssele nuclear power plant it is buying as part of its 8.2 billion euro ($11.6 billion) takeover of Essent, RWE finance director Rolf Pohlig said in an interview. (more…)

A statement by the Socialists that nuclear power is not a taboo subject within the party could signal a parliamentary majority in favour of building new nuclear power plants in the Netherlands, reports Wednesday’s Telegraaf.

Netherlands bans Iranians from studying nuclear science

BRUSSELS, July 4 (Xinhua) — The Dutch government said Friday that Iranian students are banned from approaching locations or being enrolled in study programs in the Netherlands where they might gain access to nuclear science, Radio Netherlands reported Friday.

The government specified five locations and nine academic courses which will even be out of bounds to Iranians who hold a Dutch passport. They include the Borssele nuclear power plant in southwestern Netherlands and a test reactor at Delft University of Technology. (more…)

Power plant wants to use plutonium

The Netherlands only commercial power plant at Borssele wants to begin using plutonium to generate electricity, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Thursday.

Covenant Between the Government and the Borssele Operator Concerning the Life Extension (2006)

On 16 June 2006, a covenant was concluded between the Dutch Government and the operators of the Borssele nuclear power plant concerning the plant’s life extension. N.V. Elektriciteits Produktiemaatschappij Zuid-Nederland EPZ (hereinafter EPZ) was granted a licence for an indefinite period pursuant to the 1963 Nuclear Energy Act to operate the Borssele nuclear power plant. Essent Energie B.V. and Delta Energie B.V. each hold a 50% stake in the shares of EPZ. (more…)
