Arkhangelsk governor wants nuclear power plant

Governor of Arkhangelsk Oblast, Ilya Mikhalchuk, is planning a meeting with Rosatom leader Sergey Kirienko in a bid to revitalize plans for a nuclear power plant in the region.

According to Dvinainform.ru, Governor Mikhalchuk will in the near future meet with the leader of Russia’s state nuclear energy company Rosatom to discuss the project. (more…)

Dangerous nuclear operation in Kola Peninsula

Experts from the Russian state nuclear energy company Rosatom are preparing for the removal of spent nuclear fuel from a submarine reactor in the base of Gremikha on the Barents Sea coast. The operation is highly complicated and dangerous, they say.

The spent nuclear fuel will be removed from a reactor formerly belonging to a “Alfa”-class submarine. The operation is part of the Russian effort to decommission and scrap the many retired nuclear subs left after the Soviet period. (more…)

Power fears as nuclear output cut

MORE than half of Britain’s nuclear power stations are either closed or working at reduced capacity, it emerged yesterday, prompting fears of power shortages next month.

Six of the UK’s ten nuclear stations are not operating at full capacity. Three are completely closed, one is operating at half capacity and two have been reduced to 70 per cent because of safety fears. (more…)

Russia to build 26 nuclear power reactors

Russia intends to build 26 major nuclear power reactors over twelve years to come, chief of the state-run corporation Rosatom, Sergei Kiriyenko, said. Kiriyenko was speaking at the 52nd general conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on 29th september.

“The pace of commissioning new nuclear power reactors is pegged to our current plans, but it can be adjusted in terms of scale and deadlines,” he said.”Construction work is underway at five sites (Leningrad, Novovoronezh, Kalinin, Rostov and Beloyarsk NPPs),” he said, adding that design and exploration work was in progress on another 14 reactor projects. Russia to contribute $17 mln to Chernobyl cleanup

VIENNA, September 29 (RIA Novosti) – Russia will provide $17 million to help improve safety at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the site of the world’s worst civilian nuclear disaster, and fully decommission it, a top Russian nuclear official said on Monday.

Three reactors of the Chernobyl plant continued to operate for several years after reactor number four exploded in 1986, the last reactor shutting down in 2000. The reactors still contain nuclear fuel rods, and require constant monitoring. The fourth reactor is housed in a Soviet-era sarcophagus set to be replaced by a $1.4 bln metal structure. (more…)

Russia to Build Nuclear Plant in Kaliningrad

Russia’s nuclear energy monopoly Rosatom has agreed on construction of a new power plant in Russia’s European exclave of Kaliningrad, the company said.

Rosatom chief Sergei Kiriyenko inked the deal Wednesday, Aug. 27, for the construction of the plant about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from the capital of the Baltic Sea exclave between Poland and Lithuania. (more…)

Italians to build transport vessel for spent nuclear fuel

The Russian state company on nuclear energy Rosatom this week signed an agreement with the Italian Ministry of Economic Development over the construction of a vessel for transports of spent nuclear fuel from bases on the Kola Peninsula.

According to Rosatom, the vessel will be financed as a whole by the Italian side. The ship, which is to be built by the company Fincantieri is expected to cost 71,5 million EUR. (more…)

Russia, EU to handle nuclear quotas in September

Russia and the European Union will embark on a new round of negotiations to lift hidden quotas on Russia’s nuclear exports in September 2008 during the Russia-EU summit, the head of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, Sergei Kiriyenko, said today. He reiterated that the two sides were currently negotiating a new cooperation agreement. In addition, the EU presidency is currently held by France, Europe’s largest nuclear power producer and consumer. It’s time to step up talks on the matter, Kiriyenko noted. (more…)

Russia’s Rosatom to bid to build nuclear reactor in Belarus

MINSK, July 29 (RIA Novosti) – Russian state nuclear power corporation Rosatom has agreed to take part in a tender for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Belarus, the ex-Soviet republic’s energy ministry said Tuesday.

Belarus plans to build a nuclear power plant with a capacity of 2,000 MW, with the first unit to come online in 2016 and the second in 2018. The plant is expected to have Generation III water-moderated reactors. (more…)

Reactor got another 10 years

The 35 year old reactor at the Kola Nuclear Power Plant last week got the authorities’ blessing for another ten years of service.

The reactor is the oldest of the four reactors at the Kola NPP, Russia’s northernmost nuclear power plant. According to Rosatom, the company which is running all of Russia’s nine NPPs, the reactor will now produce power until year 2018.
