Iberian power prices dip on weather, nuclear plant

MADRID, March 25 (Reuters) – Iberian power prices declined on Tuesday as temperatures rose after an unseasonable cold snap and a nuclear power plant came back on stream, traders said.

The 1,000-megawatt Trillo plant near Madrid was automatically disconnected from the national grid on Monday afternoon due to a sudden drop in power while water tanks were being cleaned. (more…)

EDF may swap nuclear plants for Iberdrola stake-paper

PARIS/MADRID, March 14 (Reuters) – French President Nicolas Sarkozy has persuaded his Spanish counterpart to let EDF take a 15 to 18 percent stake in Spain’s Iberdrola in exchange for control of some nuclear power plants in France, ABC newspaper reported.

Citing no sources, ABC said this solution would allow state-controlled EDF to gain a foot in Spain, and let Iberdrola add more nuclear power to its portfolio while Spain keeps the lid on building more nuclear plants at home. (more…)

Price for French nuclear tech may prove too high

With France pushing for greater cooperation on nuclear power with Romania, the Canadians who first introduced nuclear tech to Romania argue the Gallic technology comes at a cost the country may not be willing to pay.

Romania plans to build a second nuclear power station, but its rumoured interest in French nuclear technology may prove too expensive an option. News of the country’s flirtation with French nuclear technology arose when President Nicolas Sarkozy visited Bucharest last February. (more…)

Spain nuclear lobby calls for 13 GW in new plants

MADRID, Feb 7 (Reuters) – Spain needs to build at least 13,000 megawatts worth of nuclear plants to achieve a feasible power generation mix by 2030, according to a study released by the country’s nuclear lobby on Thursday.

Spain’s eight existing nuclear power reactors each produce about 1,000 MW of electricity, but new reactors being built in other countries are much bigger. (more…)

Spanish government to sell abandoned nuclear plant sites

The Spanish government plans to open tenders for purchase of land at three sites for nuclear power plants that never operated, a spokesman at the Ministry of Industry, Trade & Tourism said May 9. The plants fell victim to the country’s 1984 nuclear construction moratorium. (more…)
